Viewpointed morphology: A unified account of Spanish verb-complement compounds as fictive interaction structures

چکیده

Spanish verb-complement (VC) compounds, one of the most common compound types in Spanish, raise interesting questions, because they are inflected, prototypically containing a verb third-person singular present indicative. This complexity seems paradoxical, given strong restrictions Romance languages on word compounding. Based self-compiled corpus over 1,400 VC we show that compound’s may display different persons and illocutionary forces. We claim all compounds can be parsimoniously accounted for as involving grammaticalized perspective-indexing structure, setting up non-actual enunciation. identify three subtypes nominal according to whether refer to: (i) fictive addresser enunciation it is composed (e.g. metomentodo [I+put+myself+into+everything], ‘meddler’), (ii) addressee tentetieso [hold+yourself+upright], ‘tilting doll’), or (iii) conversational topic pintalabios [paints+lips], ‘lipstick’). further argue that, despite undeniable morphological constraints, involve similarly complex semantic structure English multi-word like ‘ wanna-be (s)’, forget-me-not bring-and-buy sale’. reveals intersubjectivity central formation.

A Hebrew verb-complement dictionary

We present a verb-complement dictionary of Modern Hebrew, automatically extracted from text corpora. Carefully examining a large set of examples, we defined ten types of verb complements that cover the vast majority of the occurrences of verb complements in the corpora. We explored several collocation measures as indicators of the strength of the association between the verb and its complement....

In situ Focus in Caribbean Spanish: Towards a Unified Account of Focus

Languages use a variety of strategies to signal non-presupposed, focused information. Some languages attach a morpheme to the focused constituent, others mark focus prosodically. A third, widely available way of focusing a constituent, involves clefting with a copular verb. Spanish displays the latter two strategies, which, at first site, do not share much in common: clefting involves two claus...

Event anaphors – a unified account ?

This paper is concerned with different types of event anaphors in English and to some extent also in Swedish. The point of departure is the seminal work of Hankamer and Sag (1976) where two major classes of anaphors are suggested, namely surface anaphors and deep anaphors. An important distinction is that surface anaphors, such as the VP-ellipsis, demand a linguistically realized antecedent, wh...

Zoque Verb Compounds

Linguists have long sought to understand the tie between verb meaning and the number and types of arguments the verb projects to the syntax (see 1). While subcategorization frames and selectional restrictions describe the constraints on the range of arguments that may appear with verbs, these devices are obvious bandaid solutions that call for deeper explanation. 1. English verb argument struct...
